Rolleston College Expansion
The Rolleston College Expansion 2 project comprised a significant two-part development delivered through three stages of building consents. At its core was the construction of a new two-level teaching block spanning approximately 3,200 m². This structure was founded on a rib raft foundation and framed with structural steel, featuring a combination of James Hardie® EasyLap™, Dimond Profiled, and Fundermax facade claddings. The roofing system utilized RoofLogic Ultratherm MSR and Conqueror Insulated Roof Systems, while powder-coated, double-glazed aluminium joinery was installed to enhance thermal performance. The new teaching block is seamlessly connected to the existing campus via a suspended link bridge and two external precast staircases.
Additional expansions included the conversion of 260 m² of existing staff and student services areas into senior learning spaces, as well as a 250 m² gymnasium extension featuring new claddings, a slab-on-grade foundation, and Conqueror PIR insulated roofing panels.
The ground floor of the new teaching block was thoughtfully designed to accommodate various functional spaces, including photo suites, art rooms, student administration offices, meeting rooms, and a student services office. It also houses makerspaces for engineering and fabrics, alongside restrooms serving both the building and the adjacent sports fields. The first floor contains three large regular learning spaces, twelve additional learning areas, teacher workspaces, storage rooms, and additional toilets. Accessibility is prioritized through the installation of a lift connecting both floors, while the suspended link bridge facilitates integration with the existing structure, supporting smooth circulation across the expanded campus. Between the old and new blocks, an undercroft outdoor area with secured gates was created to serve as flexible learning space, allowing safe gatherings and enhancing indoor-outdoor flow for students and staff.
Complementary developments included a 165 m² garage and a 24 m² caretaker’s shed to support campus infrastructure. Improvements to the existing teaching block involved the addition of a new hard-tech circulation enclosure and storeroom, enhancing both functionality and connection to the new facilities. Extensive civil works and landscaping established improved access between the adjacent covered sports court and modular buildings. Following the removal of the modular buildings, the landscaped area will provide half basketball courts, shaded zones, and a seamless indoor-outdoor transition, further enriching the school environment and overall campus layout.
