Watts & Hughes were invited by Unispace to complete the base build works of the new Westmount School located in Timaru.

The project consisted of a new learning centre and a gym building. Both structures were constructed from pre-cast panels (ranging from 5.6m – 1.6m), structural steel, profiled metal roofing and cladding.

The learning centre is 572m2, 6m at its highest point and 3.8m at its lowest point. The centre is broken down into senior school and junior school. The centre includes multipurpose classrooms, studios, kitchen facilities and reflective zones. The learning centre is constructed by steel stud with noise line gib installed to a portion of the rooms, with aluminium glass sliding doors to open up areas when needed. The finish to the walls are paint and autex and the floor coverings were a variety of finishes including carpet tiles, vinyl, polished concrete and artificial grass.

The gym is 780m2, 7m to the highest point. The gym was constructed by timber stud, plasterboard and strandboard. The walls were all painted and finished with seratone. The gym has a full size basketball court, a music room, a performing stage, changing rooms, an innovation zone, food tech studio, canteen and store.

A canopy runs to the front of both buildings and in-between. We installed uninterrupted glass to front of the learning centre, the same to the top section but with powdercoated louvres. The school grounds include a sports field, netball court, playground, hardcourt and a senior and junior outdoor learning area.
