The New Brighton Library suffered damage in the 2010/2011 earthquakes and subsequent degradation of the facility. The Christchurch City Council required building repairs to bring the structure up to 67% NBS. In addition, they also required structural repairs and critical maintenance to the lighting and fire systems.

The works included, but were not limited to, seismic strengthening in connecting roof structure to walls to complete building diaphragm, seismic strengthening in connecting the steel rafters to the concrete columns, steelwork corrosion repairs, structural glazing replacement, concrete crack repairs, replacement of carpet, repairs to restaurant deck, upgrade of existing lighting system, fire safety upgrades for signage and emergency lighting and cosmetic repairs.
